Michael David Loven, Ph.D.

My Background

I opened my private practice in 1984 and have provided psychological services to children, adolescents, and adults and served as a consultant/trainer since that time.  Prior to this, I worked in the North Carolina Community Mental Health system from 1979 until 1984 as a Senior Psychologist at Orange-Person-Chatham Mental Health Center (Chapel Hill and Hillsborough), and as Director of Children and Youth Services at Blue Ridge Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

I received my B.A. degree from the University of Tennessee in 1973, majoring in Honors Psychology.  After working in developmental disabilities as well as psychiatric services in Tennessee for several years, I enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for graduate school in 1975 and received my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in 1980.  I completed a one year internship through the Memphis Clinical Psychology Internship Consortium from 1978-79, working with children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings ranging from a community health center to psychiatric hospitals.

From 1980 through 1984, I was Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, providing supervision for graduate-level interns.  I have continued to serve as a consultant to schools, specialized treatment programs, as well as community mental health agencies.

I am a member of the American Psychological Association and the North Carolina Psychological Association.  I am on the National Register of Health Services Providers in Psychology, and a participating member in the American Academy of Psychotherapists, currently serving on the Mentoring Committee.  I am certified as a Parent Coordinator and as a Guardian ad Litem in North Carolina.

I enjoy community/volunteer work and have served on various boards, including the Durham Companions, Atlantic Center for Research in Education, the Durham County Mental Health Center’s Child Advisory Board, the North Carolina Psychological Association’s Child, Adolescent and Family Committee and Legislative Committee, and the Advocates for Adolescents of Healthy Carolinians (Orange County).  I currently serve on the Hill Center Professional Advisory Committee in Durham; The Hill Center is a specialized school that serves children and adolescents with learning disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
